190 - REFERRAL TO SURGEON AND COUNSELING - Refer patient to General Surgeon and conduct social assessment of patient to determine patient's surgeon visit needs.
190.1 Develop correctly translated books, videos, and materials relating to diagnosis, treatment, nutrition, survival, psychological support and death, utilizing patient testimonials when possible. Include low literacy versions.
190.2 Select providers that are bilingual, accessible geographically, culturally sensitive and who offer positive support. Provide low literacy educational material, and perform periodic patient satisfaction surveys.
190.3 Reduce fear by providing one-on-one education and support and referral to appropriate support organizations.
190.4 Offer patient a referral to a general surgeon whenever abnormal results.
190.5 Provide options to patient to assist patient in making an informed decision.
190.6 Include family members such as spouse or significant other as part of patient's support system.
190.7 Inform patient of availability of alternative medicine as option for treatment or to be used in conduction with treatment recommended by surgeon.
