The complexity of current public policy issues requires us to think differently about society's goals for sustainability, equity, and prosperity across cultures, communities, states, and nations. Policymakers must be prepared to generate innovative policy approaches that include "evidence-based"
analysis as well as information and judgments
about the needs of their communities, the values
of influential stakeholders and community members,
and the resources available to implement policies
designed to encourage individual, community,
government, and market behaviors that lead
to desired results.
To accomplish this, a new generation of policymakers must create an analysis model that incorporates the essential elements of collaborative and ethical leadership, social justice and equity, and global interdependence into traditional "rational model" analysis. To ensure their success in increasingly complex environments, the MPP program will provide future policy professionals with a "toolbox" of competencies containing the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for a new era of steady public policy development and institutional change. We include the most important analytic questions: What is the problem? What are the possible options to addressing it? What are the likely outcomes of each alternative? What political and social values are reflected in the options? |
