It's important that all students learn how to write up a good resume to advance in their careers and fields.

Do... 
  • Use good quality (at least 20 lb. bond) paper in white or off-white
  • Use a readable font and print on a laser printer
  • Check the spelling of every word; make sure grammar and punctuation are correct
  • Begin phrases with action verbs such as "developed," "initiated," etc.
  • Keep descriptions simple and to the point
  • Be truthful about your accomplishments
  • Have someone else proofread your resume
  • Get feedback from several people
  • Keep your resume to one page if you have limited work experience
  • Be specific in your objective, if you use one, emphasize results produced, significant achievements, recognition from others
  • Quantify when possible and use specific examples
Don't... 
  • Begin phrases with "I" or use complete sentences
  • Include personal information such as marital status, social security number, age
  • Use flashy graphics or colored paper
  • Mention controversial activities or associations
  • List unrelated, detailed duties such as "opened mail," "filed documents"
  • Exaggerate your experience
  • Start phrases in the experience section with "My responsibilities (or duties) included"
  • Use abbreviations
Cover Letter Tips The objective of the cover letter is to present a brief overview of yourself to the employer. By presenting your personal information in a coherent format, your objective is to convince the employer that your skills are valuable to the employer. Below are some tips to aid you in preparing a concise cover letter. Avoid lengthy letters exceeding 1 page. Most cover letters consist of 3 paragraphs.
Paragraph 1: Brief self-introduction including a description of your career objective.

Paragraph 2:A short description of your education, skills and other relevant information.

Paragraph 3:A closing paragraph indicating your salary requirements, contact address and contact number. Ensure that you include your e-mail and fax contact if available.
