Systems Management

Demonstrate an understanding of and begin to develop the skills necessary to manage complex systems of health and human service delivery.

Core Competencies:

Knowledge: The ability to demonstrate an understanding of the different organizational cultures, structures, roles and responsibilities of federal, state, local governments, CBOs and not-for-profit agencies; and the relationships within and between organizations and their communities.

Skills: Demonstrate the ability to:

      • Develop mission and vision statements, and differentiate between them
      • Assess the needs of a community and the organization's ability to serve those identified needs
      • Assess the organization or program's ability to deliver services appropriate to its known mission statement, and the impact those services have on the community

Attitudes: Demonstrate the ability to recognize and describe the purpose or value of organizations and systems in most effectively serving their communities.

Supporting Competencies:

Knowledge:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of what " systems" are and how they work
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of roles and responsibilities of and relationships between and among boards of directors, advisory boards, staff, volunteers, boards of supervisors, city council members, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of basic external and internal regulatory processes and public policy analysis and development

Skills:

  • Ability to demonstrate one's skills in working within one or more of these systems
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of systems' processes and one's skill at conducting an appropriate assessment of one's position in the system
  • Abilty to develop a mission statement, organizational chart, organizational goals, objectives, activities and methods of evaluation

Attitudes:

  • Ability to demonstrate one's recognition of the complex dynamic relationship between a fiscal agent, service provider and the community being served, and the need for prioritizing delivery of services in consideration of budget constraints and resource scarcity
