Professional Development

Demonstrate the ability to apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for growth and development as an entry-level professional by producing evidence of increasing self-awareness and self-correcting behavior.

Core Competencies:

Knowledge: Demonstrate an understanding and application of personal and professional values, ethics, and actions as they relate to professional behavior in the public and non-profit sectors including:

  • Professional codes of conduct and standards of behavior
  • Professional and organizational culture – expectations and responsibilities
  • Organizational and human relationship dynamics
  • Awareness of power dynamics and appropriate use of authority
  • Application of cultural sensitivity and awareness methods

Skills: Demonstrate the ability to present oneself in a professional manner and perform complex duties in the working environment including the ability to:

  • Produce examples of professional level writing including a resume, agency reports, progress notes, and other applicable records
  • Present clear and concise oral presentations.
  • Analyze and synthesize agency records, documents and reports
  • Follow written and oral instructions
  • Skillfully interview for internship and employment positions
  • Receive and incorporate feedback, and seek consultation as necessary from supervisors/staff
  • Apply appropriate interview, assessment, planning and development methods
  • Use personal reflection and critical thinking techniques when analyzing and assessing professional situations in need of self-correcting behavior
  • Apply problem-solving and solution-focused methods in organizational assessment
  • Demonstrate personal and professional behavior through:
    • Accountability or taking responsibility for your actions
    • Dependability shows that you are consistent in your performance and behavior and are worthy of reliance or trust
    • Punctuality is the practice of adhering to an appointed or agreed upon time or deadline
    • Civility is the act of showing regard for others and not being rude which is marked by satisfactory adherence to social usages and sufficient consideration for others
    • Respect for self, clients and coworkers by showing an objective, unbiased consideration and regard for one’s rights, values, beliefs and property
    • Resourcefulness or the willingness to take the initiative on projects
    • Commitment to agency mission, goals and clients

Attitudes : Demonstrate the following:

  • Willingness to engage in "life-long learning" by committing to learning and adapting to a changing work environment and new technologies, over one's career, e.g., professional training w/certificate of completion, professional advancement and recognition awards, etc.
  • Willingness to project a positive public image as a representative of the organization, through appropriate behavior, conduct, and appearance
  • Accepting challenges to one's biases and beliefs
  • Developing an inter-professional (or cross-disciplinary professional) identity
  • Taking pride in one's work processes and products
