Collaboration
The ability to work in teams in interprofessional settings across traditional lines of programs, agencies, disciplines, and diverse communities to establish and achieve common missions and purposes and to collaborate with others in decision making, learning, completing tasks and applying knowledge of group process and group interaction.

Core Competencies:

Knowledge: Demonstrate an understanding of what collaboration means, why it is important.
and how community conditions can be improved by employing the collaboration process.

Skills: The ability to build consensus and sustain participation with an interprofessional group.
Solving problems and resolving interprofessional conflicts with an ability to use different decision making processes relevant for collaborative groups.

Attitudes: Demonstrate the ability to share resources, expertise, and responsibility to achieve a common goal in a collaborative setting.

Supporting Competencies:

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept of networking as a means of developing a matrix of community linkages to foster and support new relationships in formal and informal groups and build effective working relationships with other organizations and services.
  • Demonstrate understanding of how coalitions and partnerships help to increase comprehensive/integrated human service programs and delivery systems.
  • Demonstrate understanding of different modalities of learning to support collaborative practices.
  • Demonstrate understanding of diversity and culture to promote collaboration.

Skills:

Initiation of Collaborative Endeavors:

  • Demonstrate an ability to work with the diverse missions of varying organizations.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in promoting change and collaboration within and outside the organizational structure.
  • Display an ability to identify and bring together community resources for comprehensive services and how to mutually exchange resources and benefits with others.
  • Maintain goal orientation when defining objectives by developing plans that work toward a common mission and collaborative strategy.

Development of Collaborative Group Structures and Processes:

  • Demonstrate an ability to build and enhance trust and team building efforts encouraging participation from all partners.
  • Provide encouragement and support to the partners in the decision-making process to empower them to take action.
  • Create models and procedures to distribute work effectively among participants of a collaborative. Train group members to share resources and assume responsibility for tasks.
  • Demonstrate critical listening skills, oral communication, and integrate feedback by communicating verbally, in writing and electronically to keep members of the collaborative informed of progress toward these objectives.

Development of Interpersonal Knowledge and Skills:

  • Create a collaborative learning environment that acknowledges diversity while promoting change.
  • Demonstrate the ability to tap into and include the experiences of participants and the social customs of diverse groups when working to build collaboration.
  • Gain the support of people by including them in the decision-making process and obtain the contribution of their assets and resources.
  • Display an understanding of power dynamics in collaboration. Utilize effective group problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate the importance of building bridges and overcoming turf issues. Be persistent in maintaining the direction of the organization by anticipating conflict and know how to mediate when necessary. Assess and resolve conflicting positions by finding underlying, compatible interests.

Development of Organizational Operations:

  • Design a plan to manage joint projects effectively, working creatively with public agencies and not-for-profit organizations to increase effective and efficient operation of a collaborative venture through leveraging funds and other innovative strategies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in promoting change and collaboration within and outside the organizational structure.
  • Display an ability to create reports, flowcharts, and process maps to describe how collaboration functions.

Evaluation of Collaborative Endeavors:

  • Monitor the performance of a group or organization. Evaluate effectiveness and recognize when modifications are needed to improve a collaborative process.
  • Learn from past actions and use the resulting knowledge to develop models of operation based on best practices' theory and the existing realities.
